The Uselessness of Money
“Yet all this does me no good…”
The famous multimillionaire, Howard Hughes, was one of the richest men in the world. This businessman gradually became a lonely hermit.
He would not trust anyone; he would mistreat or would hide from all. When he died in 1976 he did not even have a friend by his side and many hated him.
The declaration made by Haman, applies to everyone that trust in riches. Money is useless, without love, peace and joy.
Haman was a very rich man— A prince in the court of King Ahasuerus, an educated man that was respected by the king and the officials. He was honored by the people and feared by his enemies.
But Haman was not a happy man, because it is impossible to be happy without God. Haman hated God and the people of Israel. Haman became the biggest enemy of Mordecai and the whole Hebrew nation.
Every time he would see Mordecai, he would be filled with anger and jealousy. He knew that he did not have the moral principles of the Jews, and even though he was materialistically rich, he could not buy spirituality or happiness.
What are riches, social position and all vanities of this world good for, if they cannot provide happiness?
Or like Jesus said:
“For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
