The Holy Place
“…before the inner sanctuary…”
The Most Holy Place, or Holy of Holies, was at the further end of God’s temple in Jerusalem and it was its most important part. Found in this place was the Ark of the Covenant and the actual presence of God. A veil covered this holy place and in front of it was a lamp of gold.
When Jesus died on the cross, the veil ripped completely; leaving uncovered the Most Holy Place. The lamp which once shed a beautiful light in front of the veil, was now illuminating every corner of the temple.
In Christ’s day, the temple of the Lord did not have the Ark of the Covenant, or the presence of God. Worship had become a cold religious ceremony, full of rituals and laws, but without God.
When the veil was ripped, light entered the Most Holy Place. The torn veil represents Christ’s opening the way to the throne of God. We no longer need priests and sacrifices in order to get near to the Lord. Christ is the WAY, and through him we can attain salvation and have communion with God himself!
This veil also represents the wall of separation between us and God because of the sin which was around our hearts. The light of Christ did not illuminate our inner man, because our spirit that was “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).
Only Christ can tear this veil with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. His light will then fill the dark corners of the hearts of those who hear his eternal message and accept it. Has the veil of your heart been torn by Christ?
